Is the Groove Depth of a Split Ring or Shear Plate Timber Connector Adjustable?

Are They Adjustable?

In short, yes. The grooving tool for installing split rings and the dapping tool for installing shear plates allow the depth of the cut to be adjusted.

Both tools have either two or four carriage bolts that set the depth of the groove cut into the wood. The headed ends of the bolts project from the tool in the same direction as the cutting blades, preventing the wood member and the blades from engaging any further.

The threaded end of the bolt is assembled through a tapped threaded hole on the tool itself and secured with a nut. The bolt can be threaded into the tool further allowing the blades to cut deeper.

Alternatively, the bolt can be drawn out of the tool further to decrease the engagement between the blade and the wood member.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo: Kingdoms of Asia

Fresno, California

Over the years the Fresno Chaffee Zoo has added exhibits such as African Adventure, Sea Lion Cove, Reptile House, and Tropical Rainforest.

For the next exhibit, Kingdoms of Asia, Portland Bolt was tasked with manufacturing 29 custom-length tie rod assemblies.

With Portland Bolt’s Tie Rod Calculator, quoting system, and easy-to-read drawings that include mark numbers, the contractor was easily able to confirm the tie rod sizes to be ordered correctly.

Our experienced manufacturing team assembled the clevises and turnbuckles making sure of proper fit and marked each assembly. This is so the contractor can easily identify which rods go where without having to dig through 29 custom assemblies.
