The small Caribbean island of Roatán, located off the coast of Honduras, is among many islands in the region grappling with energy challenges. It has traditionally relied on diesel turbines, which are costly and environmentally taxing. With Roatán experiencing steady growth in tourism and economic development, the need for a more sustainable energy solution has become increasingly urgent.

In response, a new hybrid energy initiative has been introduced, aiming to reduce the island’s dependence on diesel by integrating cleaner sources of power. As part of this shift, a proposal was put forward in the summer of 2024 to construct a 25-megawatt (MW) power plant on Roatán. This project is designed to enhance energy reliability and support the growing demands of the island’s municipalities, including Roatán and Santos Guardiola.

The estimated investment for this ongoing project is approximately $41 million. Once completed, the plant will generate cleaner energy using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), marking a significant step toward sustainable development. Beyond addressing the island’s energy needs, the initiative also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental preservation. By embracing this cleaner, greener approach, Roatán is positioning itself as a forward-thinking destination committed to both progress and the planet.

A project of this size requires a large number of high-strength anchor bolts to be embedded in the ground. In November of 2024, Portland Bolt provided a handful of anchor bolts for this ongoing power plant project. The configuration of the anchor bolts required consisted primarily of fully threaded rods. In total, approximately 610 lbs. of anchor bolts were shipped from Portland, Oregon to Roatan, Honduras ranging in diameter from 5/8” up to 7/8”.The grades of anchor bolts required included ASTM Grade 105. Because of the weather conditions in the area, all of the anchor bolts needed to be hot-dip galvanized as well as the corresponding  A194-2H nuts and F436-1 washers.

Portland Bolt’s ability to produce custom anchor rod assemblies efficiently makes us an ideal choice for projects with tight deadlines. In 2023 alone, we managed 72 international shipments to 28 countries. Our expertise in international packaging and shipping requirements ensures that Portland Bolt remains a highly dependable option for global projects.
