What’s the Difference Between Squirter® and Non-Squirter DTIs?
Quick Answer
- Squirter® DTIs and Standard DTIs are functionally identical—both ensure correct bolt tension by compressing raised bumps.
- The only difference is that Squirter® DTIs include a bright orange media that indicates visibly when the bolt is tensioned—making inspection faster and easier.
- You can use a Squirter® DTI anywhere you’d use a standard DTI. No special tools or changes needed. Just easier verification of bolt tension.
What is a DTI washer?
DTIs (Direct Tension Indicators) are single use mechanical load cells where bump compression corelates to bolt tension independently of specific torque values. Our Squirter® DTIs provide visual tension verification through the extrusion of the Safety Orange DuraSquirt® formula, eliminating the need for torque wrenches, match-marking, or feeler gages.
| Feature | Standard DTI Washers (Non-Squirter) | Squirter® DTI Washers |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Bumps compress under tension | Same bumps, orange media filled cavities |
| Tension Feedback | Requires manual feeler gauge | Orange indication media |
| Inspection | Slower, requires hands-on checks | Fast, visual—can be seen from a distance |
| Tools Needed | Feeler gauge | No tools—visual confirmation only |
How do Squirter® DTIs work?
They work the same way as regular DTIs—but better.
1. Bolt is tightened
2. Bumps compress
3. Bright orange media squirts out from the washer edge
4. You’re done. No guesswork, no tools. For a visual, check out this video.
Are Squirter® DTIs compliant with industry standards?
Yes. They meet all ASTM F959 requirements. They’re mechanically and metallurgically identical to standard DTIs—just with a helpful visual indicator.
Do I need special bolts or tools?
Nope! Use the same structural bolts (A325, A490, etc.). Squirter® DTIs are a drop-in replacement. No special installation steps. No special tools.
Can I still use a feeler gauge with Squirter® DTIs?
Yes—but you probably won’t need to. The orange indication media does the job of the gauge—visibly confirming compression and tension.
