Guardrail bolts are designed to attach W-beam guardrail panels to steel or wood posts. They are installed through pre-punched oval holes at the ends of the W-beam (or thrie-beam) guardrail sections. Guardrail bolts are engineered for roadside safety systems and meet the chemical and mechanical requirements of ASTM A307 Grade A. There is typically a domestic requirement for guardrail bolts since most highway projects that use them are federally funded State Department of Transportation projects. Guardrail bolts are hot-dip galvanized per the ASTM F2329 or A153 specifications since they are subjected to the elements and require corrosion protection.

Splice Bolts: Splice bolts (or guardrail splice bolts) are used to connect two overlapping sections of guardrail panels together end-to-end. The oval necks of the splice bolts fit into slots in the guardrail panel. Guardrail splice bolts are typically 5/8” x 1-1/4”. Properly installed splice bolts are crucial to ensure the guardrail performs as designed during collisions.

Post Bolts:  Post bolts (or guardrail post bolts) attach the guardrail panel to the vertical support wood or steel post. Post bolts are longer than splice bolts and range in length from 2” to 46”.

Grades/Specs:

Guardrail bolts, both guardrail splice bolts and guardrail post bolts, are manufactured to meet the requirements of ASTM A307 Grade A. They are hot-dip galvanized in compliance with ASTM F2329 and A153.
