Montana Refining Company Exhaust Stack

In June of 2012, Montana Refining Company hired a contractor to install a boiler exhaust stack, which had to be anchored to a concrete foundation. The anchor bolts required to hold down the exhaust stack were anything but standard. The anchor bolts required were 2” in diameter and 56-1/2” long with a 26” thread length. The grade of steel specified for the anchor bolts was ASTM F1554 Grade 55 and the configuration required was a forged hex head on the embedded end. Cook Inlet Natural Gas Storage

CINGSA, a subsidiary of Semco Energy, is building a natural gas storage facility in Kenai, Alaska to initially hold 5 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The general contractor chose Portland Bolt to supply the anchor bolts for the aggressive construction schedule. They needed a supplier that could supply galvanized headed anchor bolts for a fast track construction schedule. Portland Bolt was chosen due to our in-house hot dip galvanizing ability and our headed anchor bolt capabilities. Portland Bolt manufactured 17,000 pounds of galvanized F1554 headed anchor bolts for this project. Most of these releases were shipped within 1 week of the release date. Read more...

Nautilus Slug Catcher Expansion

In early 2010 construction began on phase II of the Nautilus - Slug Catcher Expansion project. This project consisted of installing 3,500' of 48" pipe which would expand their liquid storage capacity by 5,000 barrels, doubling their previous storage capacity.

Portland Bolt was called upon to supply over 300 - 1-1/4" and 2" diameter galvanized F1554 Grade 36 anchor bolt assemblies that would be used for the expansion. The 2" diameter anchor bolt assemblies consisted of 1-3/8" thick x 6-1/2" square base plates that were assembled and welded in place before galvanizing. Portland Bolt was able to manufacture this material in just 7 working days and have it delivered to the jobsite on schedule. With our quick turnaround and on time delivery we were able to help the contractor deliver this job ahead of schedule and within budget. Read more...

Petro Star Valdez Alaska Refinery

Originally built in 1993, the Petro Star Valdez Alaska refinery is a cutting edge refinery that produces jet fuel, marine diesel, heating oil and other products from locally produced crude. Upgrading the refinery to produce low sulfur fuels required the expansion and construction of new facilities and equipment, much of which required high strength anchor bolts designed to perform at low temperatures. Portland Bolt manufactured F1554 grade 36 and low temperature performance A320 grade L7 anchor bolts ranging in diameter from as small as 5/8" diameter to as large as 3" in diameter. Read more...

Pueblo Viejo Mine

In April of 2009, Portland Bolt was approached to manufacture anchor rods for an ore-processing facility and gold mine in the Dominican Republic. The Pueblo Viejo mine is expected to extract and process 24,000 tons of ore per day. The $2.7 billion project will create 3,500 jobs and considerable increase to the local economy.

During Phase 1, Portland Bolt delivered over 58,000 pounds of ASTM F1554 Grade 55 and 105 hot-dip galvanized anchor rods, with 52,000 pounds shipped in two weeks. To date we have provided almost 100,000 pounds of anchor bolts for this project. The assemblies ranged in diameters from 7/8" to 2-1/2" and included special packaging requirements to accommodate international shipping. The bolts were Charpy tested and many required welding. The customer needed quick delivery to meet their construction schedule. With our large steel inventory and in-house galvanizing, we were able to expedite production and deliver within the requested timeline. Read more...

El Segundo Refinery

The El Segundo Refinery is located south of Los Angeles and is one of the largest refineries on the West Coast. This Chevron refinery provides jobs for over 1,000 employees, covers over 1,000 acres, and has more than 1,100 miles of pipeline. The El Segundo Refinery is capable of refining over 270,000 barrels of crude oil every day.

Portland Bolt was the primary source of anchor bolts for this project which spanned the first nine months of 2009 and consisted of 19 separate orders. The anchor bolts required were primarily ASTM F1554 grade 36 and grade 55 ranging in diameter from 1/2" through 2", all of which were hot-dip galvanized in our facility. Portland Bolt has been a trusted anchor bolt supplier for this refinery, as well as many others, due to our ability to deliver in time frames that have initially been perceived as impossible.
