Marine Projects
Portland Bolt manufactures a variety of different fasteners for marine construction projects. Due to the corrosive environment these bolts are subjected to, marine fasteners are typically hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel. Portland Bolt has the ability to manufacture and galvanize these special bolts, rods, and fabricated plates completely in-house.
Seaside Heights Boardwalk Replacement
On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy battered the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S causing massive damage in 24 states from Florida to Maine. The worst of that damage was centered on New York and New Jersey. Seaside Heights, New Jersey was hit with 80 mph winds and a 9 foot storm surge. When the hurricane had passed, the entire mile long length of the Seaside Heights boardwalk was destroyed, as well as a large portion of the Casino Pier that connects to it. When rebuilding began, the contractor who was awarded the $13 million boardwalk replacement contract contacted Portland Bolt. The contractor was faced with a very short timeline to complete the job in order to have the boardwalk reopened in time for the 2013 tourism season.
Within a week and a half, Portland Bolt was able to ship the first release of nearly 4,000 galvanized 1” diameter timber bolts to the job site. Over the following month we also manufactured and shipped close to 11,000 galvanized 1/2” diameter timber bolts. As reconstruction continues, we will be manufacturing additional shipments of galvanized fasteners for the ramps, guardrails, and forthcoming seawall construction. Read more...

Crescent City Marina
The marina in Crescent City, California was hit hard by a tsunami resulting from the Japanese earthquake of 2011, which destroyed two-thirds of the harbor’s docks. The geographical location of the marina makes it quite susceptible to tsunamis, and as a result the new construction is being billed as “tsunami-resistant” by making the docks strong enough to withstand potential surges.
This is an ongoing project, but to date, Portland Bolt has supplied nearly 2,000 3/4” and 1” diameter hot-dip galvanized float rods, both in A36 and A449 grades, and a wide variety of other custom and stock bolts and marine hardware, including 1-1/8” diameter A449 anchor rods and ¾” diameter hex bolts.
With our in-house hot-dip galvanizing line, roll-threading capabilities, and our ability to manufacture bolts and rods quickly and correctly, Portland Bolt is an excellent source for marine projects. Read more...

Shelter Bay Marina
With our in-house galvanizing and our extremely efficient roll-threading capabilities, Portland Bolt is an excellent option for projects in the marine industry. A recent project all the way over in Panama showed just how proficient we can be on marine projects, regardless of the project location.
Shelter Bay Marina, located at the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal, was the location for a recent large construction project. The project has been in process for some time. In February of 2010, we supplied some custom galvanized hex bolts for the marina construction. More recently, in December of 2012, we shipped 9,000 pounds of galvanized custom float rods and other hardware, including hex bolts, carriage bolts, and plate washers.
This project exemplifies both Portland Bolt’s ability to ship our products all over the world, as well as our strength in supplying to the marine industry. Read more...

NOAA Marine Operations Center-Pacific
In 2010, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded the city of Newport the location of their new home port for their research fleet after much deliberation between several sites on the West Coast to replace the Seattle facility that was damaged after a fire in 2006. The new site called out for a 42,852 square-foot facility and 1300 foot long pier to be constructed. Due to federal funding for the job, the bolts had to be 100% domestic. And these were no ordinary bolts either. Portland Bolt provided over 4,200 pounds of 7/8” diameter galvanized bridge tie rods ranging from 35 feet to just under 54 feet in length to complete the pier. The center is now home to 4 research and survey vessels, 60 shore side personnel, and approximately 110 crew members. Read more...

Port of Brookings
When the catastrophic tsunami hit Japan in March of 2011, the effects were felt as far away as Southern Oregon. The Port of Brookings Harbor sustained major damage, with the tsunami destroying 70% of the port’s commercial basin.
For the reconstruction of the Port, Portland Bolt manufactured over 2,000 galvanized rods in various lengths, which were used to hold together the floating docks. We also provided several pallets of hex bolts, all thread rod, nuts and washers.
Portland Bolt’s roll threading and in-house galvanizing capabilities help make us an extremely efficient and high-quality supplier for marine projects. Read more...
Block Island Harbor Repairs
Located approximately 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, Block Island is a popular summer tourist destination known for its bicycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, scenic beaches, and two historic lighthouses. In 2011 the US Army Corps of Engineers scheduled the steel sheet pile bulkhead and timber wharf of the Block Island Harbor of Refuge, known locally as “Old Harbor,” to be repaired and replaced. The contractor selected to perform this work called Portland Bolt for the domestic hardware required on the project.
Portland Bolt manufactured several thousand custom galvanized lag bolts and hex bolts from ½” to 1” in diameter and ranging in length from 3” to 26” long. Our in-house hot dip galvanizing line gave us the production capability and quality control to ensure that all of the custom galvanized fasteners would have clean, useable threads after being shipped coast to coast and then traveling via ferry across Block Island Sound to the small island in the Atlantic Ocean where the job was located.
