Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

2010 - Bentonville, Arkansas The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is a 15 minute walk from downtown Bentonville, Arkansas and once finished will be one of the premiere art museums in America. The buildings, which also function as a dam and a bridge showcasing the water scene at the center of the structure, will house an expansive collection of American art ranging from colonial to contemporary art. The museum sits on 100 acres of land filled with trails and parks with buildings designed to be in harmony with the surrounding environment. A key component in the design and construction of the buildings is the large laminated wood beams that form the roofs of the structures. Between August and November of 2010, Portland Bolt manufactured and supplied almost four thousand 1" and 7/8" diameter hex lag bolts for installation into the laminated wood beams through steel plates. A previous supplier had supplied lag bolts which were out of tolerance due to excessive swelling and die seams underneath the head of the bolt and could not be fit through the holes in the steel plates. Due to our quality standards and experienced personnel, Portland Bolt was able to manufacture the bolts within tolerance and to the applicable specifications within the time-frame that the customer required. Please consider Portland Bolt for your custom and nonstandard fasteners manufactured right the first time.
Portland International Jetport

Portland International Jetport

2010 - Portland, Maine In mid 2010, Portland Bolt provided 14,000 lbs of galvanized hex bolts, lag bolts, threaded rods and shear plates for the wood truss structures in the Portland International Jetport Expansion Project in Portland, Maine. The airport expansion would roughly double the size of the airport creating expanded road access, double the amount of security screening points, and create three new passenger gates. Starting in the mid 1990's, travel has been steadily increasing due to the rise of smaller, low-cost airlines providing increased services to smaller airports. The $75 million dollar project was deemed necessary to keep up with the increased traffic that has grown to 1.8 million people passing through the jetport annually. The project will not only create an additional 137,000 square feet of space, but will also make huge efficiency improvements on baggage handling and energy consumption. When the project is completed in 2012 it will allow for more flights and increased tourism dollars from travelers. Portland Bolt's ability to custom make threaded rods and hot-dip galvanize them though our own galvanizing line ensured the delivery and quality required.

Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site

2010 - East Coulee, Alberta

Coal was originally reported in the Drumheller, Alberta region of Canada during the mid to late 1800's and the first mines opened in the early 1900's. The region was one of the major mining areas in Canada, producing 56,864,808 tons of coal from 1911 until it shipped its last load of coal in 1979. Now the Atlas Coal Mine National Historical Site stands as one of the most complete coal mining museums in Canada.

In October 2010 Portland Bolt was approached by a timber framing company to supply the hardware required for the restoration of the historic Atlas Coal Mine in East Coulee, Alberta. The project required numerous 2-5/8" and 4" shear plates, as well as hundreds of custom manufactured square head bolts to match the original rustic look of the mine. With our in-house manufacturing capabilities and large inventory of shear plates, we were able to meet the customer's expedited time schedule and exceed their expectations.

Grand Theatre

Grand Theatre

2010 - Douglas, Arizona

Originally opened in 1919, the Grand Theatre in Douglas Arizona was constructed for $250,000 and was one of the largest theatres in the southwest United States at the time. The theatre struggled in its first few years due to a local economic downturn and a national influenza epidemic that kept theatre goers from attendance. Despite the rocky start, the theatre would go on to host many of the top names in Vaudville, as well as silent movies. It also served as a community center for graduations from the local school and other town events. In 1958 the doors shut and a period of decay begun that caused a large amount of damage and disrepair to the establishment. $1 was the purchase price a group of concerned Douglas resident paid for the theatre in the 1980s with the hope of a restoration that is estimated at $9.5 million in cost. Portland Bolt manufactured custom high strength and heat treated A449 anchor bolts as well as F1554 Grade 55 all thread rod anchor bolts for the earthquake retrofit project portion of the project. Since our founding in 1912, Portland Bolt has been proud and honored to be involved in such notable and unique projects.

LAX Theme Building

LAX Theme Building

2009 - Los Angeles, California

Originally built in 1961, the restaurant and observation deck has been likened to “The Jetsons” with its futuristic design, although the show debuted a year later.  In 2009, This iconic Los Angeles International Airport building underwent renovation and shoring up of its roof after a 1,000 pound slab of stucco fell from the arches almost hitting the restaurant.  Portland Bolt was called on to provide custom rolled 17+ foot A193 grade B8M Class 2 strain hardened rods.  With our 100 years of industry knowledge, we were able to quote and deliver these special length, high strength stainless steel rods.  Each of the 60 rods had to have special mark numbers for quick and easy identification on the job site which is a value added service that Portland Bolt’s shipping department routinely provides.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Headquarters

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Headquarters

2009 - Seattle, Washington

Construction on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's new headquarters started in early 2009. The multi building, campus style headquarters is located in downtown Seattle. Through a large NW fabricator, Portland Bolt supplied over 700 small plain steel rods 7/8" & 1" diameter up to 20" long. Portland Bolt also supplied large galvanized tie rods for the job. The tie rods ranged in diameter from 5/8" to 1¾" up to 28½ feet long and were threaded right hand thread on one end and left hand thread on the other end, with a galvanized clevis on each end. Over 250 of these tie rods were required to complete the job.

JL Tower

JL Tower

2008 - Anchorage, Alaska

One of the newest Class "A" office towers in Anchorage, this building will be an important part of the larger seven acre development. The tower is comprised of a structural steel frame with an aluminum and stone panel exterior.

The steel structure required over 19,000 pounds of ASTM F1554 grade 105 anchor rods to secure it to the foundation. The largest of these rods were 2-3/4 inches in diameter and almost eight feet long.
