Industrial Projects
With our broad manufacturing capabilities including, hot-dip galvanizing, large steel inventory, and light fabrication, we are able to provide quick deliveries crucial for industrial projects. Below are some of the projects we have supplied material.
Nautilus Slug Catcher Expansion - Centerville, LA
In early 2010 construction began on phase II of the Nautilus - Slug Catcher Expansion project. This project consisted of installing 3,500' of 48" pipe which would expand their liquid storage capacity by 5,000 barrels, doubling their previous storage capacity.
Portland Bolt was called upon to supply over 300 - 1-1/4" and 2" diameter galvanized F1554 Grade 36 anchor bolt assemblies that would be used for the expansion. The 2" diameter anchor bolt assemblies consisted of 1-3/8" thick x 6-1/2" square base plates that were assembled and welded in place before galvanizing. Portland Bolt was able to manufacture this material in just 7 working days and have it delivered to the jobsite on schedule. With our quick turnaround and on time delivery we were able to help the contractor deliver this job ahead of schedule and within budget.

Originally built in 1993, the Petro Star Valdez Alaska refinery is a cutting edge refinery that produces jet fuel, marine diesel, heating oil and other products from locally produced crude. Upgrading the refinery to produce low sulfur fuels required the expansion and construction of new facilities and equipment, much of which required high strength anchor bolts designed to perform at low temperatures. Portland Bolt manufactured F1554 grade 36 and low temperature performance A320 grade L7 anchor bolts ranging in diameter from as small as 5/8" diameter to as large as 3" in diameter.
Due to the accelerated construction schedule, the remote location of the job and oncoming Alaska winter weather that would halt construction, Portland Bolt had to navigate complicated testing requirements and juggle multiple material sources in order to manufacture the anchor bolts in an expedited time frame required by the customer. Shipments often involved highly critical ocean and air freight shipment dates and Portland Bolt was entrusted to meet these dates and to supply quality and correct product to the jobsite.
Pueblo Viejo Mine - Dominican Republic
In April of 2009, Portland Bolt was approached to manufacture anchor rods for an ore-processing facility and gold mine in the Dominican Republic. The Pueblo Viejo mine is expected to extract and process 24,000 tons of ore per day. The $2.7 billion project will create 3,500 jobs and considerable increase to the local economy.
During Phase 1, Portland Bolt delivered over 58,000 pounds of ASTM F1554 Grade 55 and 105 hot-dip galvanized anchor rods, with 52,000 pounds shipped in two weeks. To date we have provided almost 100,000 pounds of anchor bolts for this project. The assemblies ranged in diameters from 7/8" to 2-1/2" and included special packaging requirements to accommodate international shipping. The bolts were Charpy tested and many required welding. The customer needed quick delivery to meet their construction schedule. With our large steel inventory and in-house galvanizing, we were able to expedite production and deliver within the requested timeline.

The El Segundo Refinery is located south of Los Angeles and is one of the largest refineries on the West Coast. This Chevron refinery provides jobs for over 1,000 employees, covers over 1,000 acres, and has more than 1,100 miles of pipeline. The El Segundo Refinery is capable of refining over 270,000 barrels of crude oil every day.
Portland Bolt was the primary source of anchor bolts for this project which spanned the first nine months of 2009 and consisted of 19 separate orders. The anchor bolts required were primarily ASTM F1554 grade 36 and grade 55 ranging in diameter from 1/2" through 2", all of which were hot-dip galvanized in our facility. Portland Bolt has been a trusted anchor bolt supplier for this refinery, as well as many others, due to our ability to deliver in time frames that have initially been perceived as impossible. We were happy to prove otherwise.

From February through October of 2008, Portland Bolt supplied over 37,000 pounds of galvanized anchor bolts for the upgrade of ConocoPhillips' refinery in Rodeo, California. The Rodeo facility is the second location of the San Francisco Refinery that is linked by a 200 mile pipeline to the Santa Maria, California refinery. The Rodeo location further refines primarily high-sulfur crude oil sent from the Santa Maria location into finished petroleum products, including diesel fuel, jet fuel and gasoline. The project included the construction of a hydrocracker facility for which Portland Bolt provided the custom foundation anchor bolts.
The anchor bolts supplied on the job ranged in diameter from ½" all the way up to 2¼" and were custom manufactured in a wide variety of lengths, grades, and configurations. Portland Bolt was able to meet the aggressive foundation schedule as well as accommodate the packing and shipping requirements that clearly identified the shipments by mark number. Our ability to quickly supply expedited shipments is due to our extensive inventory of materials and our ability to galvanize the bolts we manufacture in our own specialized hot-dip galvanizing plant.
Launch Pad - White Sands, NM
As part of NASA's Constellation program, a new Launch Abort System (LAS) is being constructed at the flight testing facility on the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range. This project is developing unmanned exploration of the Moon and Mars. The new launch pad will test the LAS during an emergency.
The foundation work on this site called for 1-1/2" ASTM F1554 anchor rods. Each grade 105 assembly consisted of 6 anchor rods, two 2-1/2" thick anchor plates, and a 6" long coupling nut attached to each rod then welded to the underside of the base plate. To ensure proper alignment, all-thread rod was threaded into the coupler prior to welding. The manufacturing and welding processes were completed in our facility. The assemblies were shipped to the jobsite in New Mexico ready for installation.
Liquid Petroleum Gas Plant - Jubail, Saudi Arabia
Several times a year we get the opportunity to work with customers who have projects overseas. In 2007, a global provider of advanced combustion systems, asked Portland Bolt to supply anchor rods and J-bolts to support the flare stacks and panel racks for the new Sahara Al-Waha Petrochemical Plant. These galvanized anchor assemblies included nuts welded to 2-1/2" and 1-3/8" diameter anchor rods. After manufacturing was finished, the bolts were sent to Oklahoma to be packaged with other parts then sent together to the jobsite in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
This $526 million liquid petroleum gas processing plant is being built and managed by Sahara Al-Waha. The facility will manufacture petrochemical products crucial to the region and is scheduled to come online the end of 2008.

Beginning in August of 2006, Portland Bolt has been supplying hot-dipped galvanized anchor bolts and miscellaneous metals to Tesoro Corporation's coker modification of the Golden Eagle Refinery in Martinez, California. The new coker unit covers 70 acres and the demanding foundation pour schedules require delivery on short lead times and within the strict certification standards required by Fluor, the engineering firm for the expansion.
All anchor bolts are being manufactured to ASTM A193-B7 and ASTM F1554 in all three grades, 36, 55, and 105. One example of the type of assemblies being installed at this project was 61,000 pounds of 3 inch diameter by ten feet long ASTM F1554 grade 105 anchor bolts that included large welded pipe sleeves and 2 inch plates. Miscellaneous metals that Portland Bolt has been providing for this project consists of embed plates, angles, and pipe sleeves all with welded studs.
We are able to meet these demands primarily due to the large inventory of raw material we maintain and our ability to galvanize material in-house. Most products being shipped to this job are hot-dipped galvanized, shipping in 12 working days or less.
